The Lax Kw’alaams Band, a Canadian first nations people living in British Columbia, have refused nearly a billion dollar offer from Petronas, a Malaysian energy company. The money was an attempt to persuade the Band to allow the company to continue construction of a massive gas pipeline on their land. In refusing the offer, and blocking the pipeline's construction, the people gave this statement: “This is not a money issue: this is environmental and cultural.”

Burundi’s vice president has fled the country, fearing for his life after opposing President Nkurunziza’s controversial bid for a third term in office. In a 5-4 vote, the US Supreme Court has ruled that the sedative midazolam can continue to be used in state executions. This is the same sedative that was used in several botched executions condemned by the UN as “cruel” and “degrading.” These executions resulted in long periods of extreme suffering for several condemned men.
